Blood Stone Analysis Empty Blood Stone Analysis

Post  KAS--Will Fri Nov 26, 2010 4:02 am

This weekend I spent at my mothers I checked out 2 games (for the PS3.... that's what she has...). One title was Super Street Fighter IV, it's kinda hard to screw up a Street Fighter game, and ever since I played the Street Fighter IV beta, I knew the series was back in black.

However, one video game series that hasn't been to kind is the 007 franchise. It all started with Goldeneye 007, and it ended there too. The game was such an utter mess that it was good. The ability to wall enemies by shooting through hallow objects (such as doors), and even explosives doing something I'd even like to see in a modern day shooter, just without ruining the environment, blowing s**t up through walls. It was quite interesting looking back at it. And it brought up the question over whether or not explosions go through walls in the remake, because that played a major role and strategy in the original. However, the remake didn't live up to, whatever hype there was for it... I was more primarily focused on "James Bond 007: Blood Stone" which is quite possibly the stupidest title you could ever think up for a James Bond anything! The game looked good to me, it was, what seemed to me, the James Bond blockbuster of 2010! (2006 was Casino Royale, 2008 was Quantum of Solace, now this year; since MGM are bankrupt is Blood Stone... so just call it Blood Stone whether it's a movie or not!)

When first picking up this game, I had no idea what to expect. With the "Focus Shot" technique, which basically, you melee kill somebody, you get like an aim bot feature, and many people compared it to Splinter Cell's... aim bot feature. I didn't really mind this, what I did mind is I think Splinter Cell is one of the most overrated espionage games of all time... I never understood what was so fun about being Sam Fischer, using a really crappy pistol to take down people, and even when they took a step in the more bad ass direction, I didn't feel the game become more bad ass, just more overrated. Now, BS... Errr I should just call it Blood Stone.. takes a bit of a SC (now it just seems like I'm talking about Soul Calibur)... SPLINTER CELL leap, with making it a 3rd person game, ditching the traditional 1st person, and adding a little bit more pace to the game. IE you can recover after being shot really quickly. The focus shot, however cheap, isn't that unbalanced because it's not like you just look at a guy and press RT, press Y and then *BAM* the guys dead. Instead, Blood Stone took a step in the direction of you just press L3 (or LB on the XBox 360) and YOU pull the trigger, and honestly, I felt a little more professional and a little more indulged in the game.

The story didn't start off well for me, considering I wanted to get some game time in with my GF, I didn't quite follow the story, I was paying more attention to the gameplay, which is the reason why we play games, and if you play games for the story get the f**k off these forums before the rest of us go medieval on your ass. As stated earlier, the combat is faster than Splinter Cell, and faster in a good way, so that it's not like having a heart attack with Black Ops, and it's not to slow so it's not like an RPG. There are bits of Stealth portions of the game, which allow you to strategize in an already preset enemy destination (in other words, an enemy is going to go to a certain location, and if you go the right path, you'll go undetected and kill everyone without being detected... which is the core to a stealth game). This game basically sets itself up so you can either be a ghost... or you can be like me, and snap a few necks, then go in guns blazing... I feel kinda obligated when you make the propane takes flashy...

The game has a solid James Bond movie feel to it... which is appropriate considering Daniel Craig has a contract that says he's James Bond for the next 3 James Bond movies. I think I liked having it in the form of a video game too considering how much crap Quantum of Solace was (both movie and video game) since Casino Royale. In Qos the Video game, the cover based combat was poor. You'd be in cover and the enemy would still hit you... it made me feel like Daniel Cra-- Err James Bond was a complete idiot and needed to be instructed to take cover better/manually and I had to walk him to the middle of cover rather than being safe at the edge. In Blood Stone, the enemies however pretty obtuse, made for better and the cover actually works... even though you can get it shot up and lose it in about 10 shots, which is realistic. Not only that, but in QoS the enemies seemed to have an unfair advantage and I didn't feel like it was much of a James Bond game, just more or less of a, "What if we take this id Software 3 engine developed by Infinity Ward, turned you from 'Soap'/Jackson, into James Bond, and made you play through 90% of Casino Royale and the other half QoS... but in a crappy manner." Which is expected considering Treyarch was working at W@W at the time. But by doing this, this made one of the games main components pointless... Not to mention the 1st person combat was utter crap too. In BS, the combat is fluent and the cover is a great step forward.

Now I know I have nothing but good things to say about the game, and however there were 3 driving segments I passed to get where I'm currently at, I handed the controller over to my GF to let her play considering it was way more simpler than giving her the combat controls. Her opinion on it was it was bad...ASS! The 3 she played through included a boat, and an Aston-Martin DBS... which I hope we own in the future. She stated that the controls weren't bad, you were swinging around a lot, and she was expecting the car to turn a little sharper than it was... I wouldn't expect much without losing control if the car was going 100+ MPH... So as of now, I haven't tried a driving portion, but apparently she enjoyed it and got excited when the 3rd driving portion came up, either because she was bored or she was enjoying it.

So I'll finish this analysis later, but as of now... Del Taco then I'm going to play more. Smile Happy Thanksgiving!

Blood Stone Analysis Empty UPDATE: Driving

Post  KAS--Will Fri Nov 26, 2010 5:56 pm

You'd think Bizarre Creations would have driving down for a 007 game? I mean, they did create the Project Gotham Series, and recently Blur, so how could they screw up a short driving segment in a action game? By doing to much and focusing on the mechanics to little. For starters, the driving doesn't handle poorly, I think every driving game has a distinct handle to everything because it all runs on a different engine. NASCAR handles like your car will make a 90 degree turn in 6 years (which feels appropriate considering your average speed is 170), DiRT makes you feel like your skating on ice, and Blood Stone makes you feel like your, on ice... and at one point in time... you feel like your on ice, while on ice. This doesn't mean that James can't drive, it just means it's hard to control and it makes for a very good challenge when trying to avoid objects and the game doesn't give you much notice of on coming road blocks. For one, this game reminds me a lot of Duke Nukem or the Mile High Club in COD4. You have to lose a shit load of times, memorize what's going to happen then do it. This threw me out of the James Bond experience immediately and put me in a good challenging environment. So I shouldn't really nitpicket here long, but there were a few things that the game made difficult for no apparent reason. For one, the camera angle is crap. I have no idea how Bizarre Creations expects me to see through or around my Aston-Martin DBS when going at about 120 MPH and the environment is falling apart around you. So basically you have about 1 second with your icy wheels, to evade an giant object before you lose your objective which is never really innovative or your never really fleeing (so I think so far) your usually chasing something so it's like playing a game of Time Trial and if at one point you take to long after crashing... you fail...

More coming later... finishing the game tonight. Smile

Blood Stone Analysis Empty UPDATE: Final Verdict

Post  KAS--Will Sun Nov 28, 2010 5:38 am

Well finally, to conclude this entire analysis the only thing I have to say to it all is... the ending isn't half bad but isn't spectacular. It practically just, comes outta now where really. So if your going to play this game for it's awesome final battles and difficulty, this has some level of difficulty, and the battles are amazing, every environment I jumped into had it's own little challenge and feel so it didn't feel repetitive. The game just felt short (literally took about 5 hours of gameplay on Agent (hard) difficulty (which brings up another problem, who do I have to unlock veteran? Why not just let me jump straight into the meat grinder?). Without spoiling the ending, you literally kill a few bad guys, and then just shot this one guy in slow motion, then one more car scene to build a little more suspense and leaves you on a cliffhanger and your thinking, "this would be so cool if the movie tied into this somehow!!!" Which it probably won't but I could still dream right?

Another complaint about the ending coming spontaneously, was your introduced to the last weapon (M24 sniper rifle) or the last type of weapon, literally about 3 minutes, no road blocks (enemies or barriers) walking distance away from the end. Usually in games, the final level is like a level that tests your overall ability to beat the game, giving you the worst of challenge. This game however simple, uses your inexperience with counter-sniping and sniping, to make the game difficult. The last driving sequence again was as average and difficult as the last ones, except by this time, your so professional after having to do the ice driving on top of ice, that your a professional by now. The ending was pretty disappointing and is starting to get annoying in Daniel Craig, James Bond movies. In the past, James Bond would close a case, in Daniel Craigs, or at least in Casino Royale, it had every reason to leave it off on a cliff hanger, in Quantum of Solace, he was supposed to be taking down the "Quantum" organization that acts as the "Free Mason".

Finally, the big question would be, "Is this better than Black Ops?" Well, I can't entirely answer that, because I didn't play the multiplayer... I know... cry foul but I didn't have time... not only that but it couldn't even find a lobby on the PS3. I'd imagine it's better than Quantum of Solace's multiplayer (you just needed the shotgun and you were a God at the game). In terms of singleplayer, I enjoyed it a lot more than Black Ops, not as long, but it's story was better, and it put me in the experience of the entire game far better than Black Ops. Black Ops tries to make itself look so dazzling and amazing that after a while, I started fazing out, and I know this sounds a lot like Zero Punctuation but I totally agree with his review... back on topic, Blood Stone puts you in the James Bond experience, and makes you feel like Bond himself, you drive nice cars, shoot random explosive materials and send baddies flying, and now just recently with Daniel Craig, you beat the shit outta bad guys in mere seconds now. So for any reviewer that says this is a bad game, doesn't know gaming. The game is without a doubt, fun. How fun? Not the most fun you'll have ever but you won't be disappointed. I wouldn't buy this right out the door with it still being $60, but I'd wait till the price drops to about $50. Black Ops would only be a better buy because it can keep you occupied for sure longer, with zombies, IW's Multiplayer, and a singleplayer experience, but comparing Black Ops to Blood Stone is like having a rice and making Bizarre Creations start from the beginning and letting Treyarch start at the finish. So if you want a better overall experience, I say go with Blood Stone. If you want a game that you'll be playing months from now go with Black Ops.

I'm sticking with Blood Stone, because Black Ops is overrated, and I have more fun playing Blood Stone than I do playing IW's overly modified engine... sorry I've been playing the IW engine since 2003. XD

Overall Score: 8 out of 10
Pros:
+ Gives you a great James Bond experience which I've never experienced in a Bond game ever.
+ I think it's the best Bond game since Goldeneye.
+ Solid story, well played out, and some pretty stunning visuals.

Cons:
- Driving takes you out of the James Bond experience.
- The models aren't well done and too detailed, they look crappy compared to the stunning environment.
- Replay value is low considering I couldn't play online since nobody owned the game.

HOT DAYUM! If this thing is better than Nightfire and Everything or Nohing its gotta be something special. I only played 3 hours or so. Also, you should put Activision as a con.

Haha, yeah.

I never played those. I played Nightfire for a little bit, but the controls annoyed me and I didn't like it as much as Goldeneye.

The controls were always the biggest complaint, but you can map all the buttons yourself! In fact, there's even a Goldeneye setting!
I never payed Goldenee all that much, but the new one has got some fantastic reviews, so I might look it up. Shame its only for Wii though.

I was aware, but the default for Nightfire was Goldeneye controls, and with 2 analogs, I like it better with Modern Warfare's controls... well with the analog look style. Left stick controls my movement, right stick controls my head... similar to the mouse and keyboard. Smile

Overall, despite what everyone says... Blood Stone is a great game, not graphically the most amazing thing in the world, but a solid fun game, and a great James Bond experience I haven't experienced in 4 years... it's not as good as Casino Royale the movie (this is comparing apples and oranges) but as far as making me feel like James Bond, this game is #1... it's not the best/most fun James Bond game, but a damn good experience, and I now know places where I can get this game for $35! Very Happy

Correctomundo. Blood Stone is a console exclusive, excluding the Wii. When Goldeneye was first announced at E3, it was a Wii only title. Activision knew the PS3 and the 360 gamers would want a James Bond so rather than just doing one project, they did 2. I've heard nothing but bad stuff for Goldeneye.
